The Effingham Area
Settled in 1814, Effingham went by the name of Broughton until it was renamed 45 years later. The city sits between I-57 and I-70; and is often known locally as the "Crossroads of Opportunity" because of it's position between the two major Interstates.
Downtown Effingham was a rail junction for the Pennsylvania Railroad and Illinois Central Railroad; making it a significant crossroad in history. The City of New Orleans Amtrak passenger train, a successor to the Illinois Central Railroad's Panama Limited, still passes through the city.
Effingham is also known for the gigantic, million dollar, 198 foot steel cross towering over the city.
